A Note on the Dead Button Rule in Poker

Perceived as a very important rule when the players assigned to the blind bets leave poker games for whatever reason, knowing the dead button rule is necessary for all the avid poker players out there. Since no one can pay the forced bets for the players who have left the game, this simple rule can be used to make some significant adjustments in the game. Aside from being used prevalently in actual cash games, it is also used extensively in poker tournaments.

In the game of poker, many unexpected things are bound to happen, be it concerning the outcome of major poker tournaments or situations in organized home poker games. At the same time, no one can really control what the players would do whenever they step in front of the poker tables to compete. In this kind of poker game scenarios, including situations where players have to move out of the game, a rule that fixes things whenever such things happen is of great importance. As an insurance policy, the dead button rule ensures that the games would still run smoothly despite changes in the number of participants in any single game.

As the dealer button rotates in a clockwise manner, the small blind and big blind bets moves with it as well. After both blind bets were set and that particular round of poker ended, the button would then have to move once again. Once the small blind and the dealer button land on vacant seats, the player on the big blind would be used to determine who would give the small blind and who would get the dealer button next. After another round of play, that individual who gave the big blind would then have to put up the small blind next.

Whenever a small blind ends of a vacant seat, there would be no small blind bet for that particular round. In this kind of situation, the small blind is nullified because there is really no one to bet for it. The action would then pick up in the following round, as the one who last put up the big blind would then move on to pay the small blind, placing the dealer button on the previous empty seat that was occupied by the small blind. Because the button ended up on an empty seat, the cutoff participant would have to make the last moves in succession.

Despite its seeming insignificance, players can never deny the importance of this dead button rule, particularly in a come and go game like poker. In one way or the other, some participating players would have to move out of the various poker games and tournaments.
